Universal Truckload Services posted a 13.6 percent increase in profits in the fourth quarter despite a soft freight market.
The Warren, Mich.-based non-asset truckload carrier generated $163.8 million in operating revenue during the quarter, an 11.3 percent increase over the same period a year ago. Fuel surcharges increased to $15.4 million from $14.2 million in the fourth quarter 2005.
Truckload revenue fell 1.6 percent during the quarter, from $94 million in 2005 to $92.5 million last year.
Brokerage revenue increased 20.7 percent to $44.3 million, and intermodal revenue increased 63.2 percent to $27 million in the quarter.
For the full year, operating revenue increased 20.8 percent to $641.6 million from $531.3 million in 2005. Net income increased 22.4 percent to $21 million from $17.2 million.
