The newly designated chairmen of two key House committees on Jan. 5 signed an agreement setting out each one's jurisdiction in regard to security legislation.
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman-designate James L. Oberstar, D., Minn., and Homeland Security Chairman-designate Bennie G. Thompson, D., Miss., signed a Memorandum of Understanding that explains their respective roles in legislation affecting the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard.
"This agreement marks a milestone in the relationship between our two Committees," said Oberstar.
"Gone are the days of having critical homeland security legislation bogged down in jurisdictional battles. This represents the first step in fully implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations," said Thompson.
