Tom Shurstad, president of double-stake intermodal distribution specialist Pacer Stacktrain, joined the board of directors of the Intermodal Association of North America.
A veteran railroad industry executive, Shurstad joined Pacer in 2002, taking over leadership of a Concord, Calif.-based unit of third-party logistics provider Pacer International that manages one of North America's largest double-stack rail networks for distribution of containerized freight.
Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA, said his appointment reflects "Pacer's strong role in the industry and Tom Shurstad's personal commitment to making a difference in the industry's continuing success."
A onetime CEO of the Chicago-based Belt Railway, Shurstad was in management at the Southern Pacific Lines until its merger with Union Pacific and before that worked at the APL, the Port of Seattle; and the Burlington Northern Railroad.
A member of the board of the University of Denver's Intermodal Transportation Institute in Denver, Shurstad said IANA plays a key role in advancing the intermodal industry's "innovative, efficient, value-added services."
Intermodalism will become an increasingly vital key to helping manufacturers and retailers manage their supply chains competitively," he said.
