NEWARK, N.J. -- Port Newark Container Terminal has temporarily extended its gate hours and will be open Saturday to clear a backlog of containers from ships that arrived behind schedule.
Truckers who haul containers in and out of the terminal have complained of delays of up to three hours outside the terminal since the congestion developed earlier this week.
To prevent other tenants at the Port Newark-Port Elizabeth complex from being blocked by lines of trucks, two streets at the complex have been declared off-limits to truckers using the PNCT terminal.
PNCT said in a statement to customers that its gates will remain open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays through Tuesday, and for import deliveries until 7 p.m. Normally, the gates close at 4 p.m. weekdays. In addition, the terminal will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for all loaded and empty containers except refrigerated boxes.
