FedEx Supply Chain Services Inc. is teaming up with consulting firm Cap Gemini Ernst & Young U.S. to offer shippers an integrated technology platform for its fulfillment and transportation management solutions. As part of the agreement, Cap Gemini also will market the 3PL''s services.
FedEx uses technology supplied by the vendors Yantra, BridgePoint and G-Log to offer supply-chain services in these two key areas. The addition of Cap Gemini brings systems integration and applications management expertise to the table. According to Douglas Witt, chief executive officer of FedEx Supply Chain Services, the team can deliver solutions that are "very easy to get up and running in 90 days."
Research carried out by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young shows that 3PLs often fail to deliver on systems promises, said Bill Read, vice president. "We are continuing to see a level of disappointment around what is promised versus what is delivered and actually executed," he said. The partnership aims to bridge these gaps. "Our role in this from a technology standpoint is enabling the FedEx solution," he said.
Partnering arrangements between logistics services providers and consulting firms have a patchy track record but in this case "the chemistry is very strong," said Witt. He pointed out that the team currently manages all inbound and outbound transportation across all modes for Napier, Ill.-based telecommunications company Tellabs Inc. "It''s already working," he said.
