TNT Express has rolled out PACS, a pre-arrival clearance system which will speed up clearance of international shipments through Customs by up to eight hours.
Developed by TNT in partnership with Fujitsu, PACS will enable shippers to forward mandatory paperwork to Customs for inspection several hours before the shipment arrives at its destination.
TNT said that approximately 30,000 of its consignments need to be customs-cleared every night, each accompanied by up to four documents. The streamlining of these procedures is a major step forward, said Director of Infrastructure Services, Dennis Beard.
"PACS will eliminate the risk of lost or late consignment paperwork and puts our staff one step ahead of the freight carried by our planes and trucks. The result is that the customs clearance process is reduced by up to eight hours which could make a difference of a day in delivery time to some destinations," he said.
The system will be implemented at TNT's clearance gateways by the end of October.
