Stevens Air Transport has established an Eastern regional headquarters in Cherry Hill, N.J., with plans to add three stations to its 21-office nationwide network of franchise operators.
Karl Chambers, a veteran with the Inglewood, Calif., air freight forwarding organization, was promoted to Eastern regional vice president and will oversee Stevens' 10 offices east of the Mississippi. He will be responsible for finding independent air freight forwarders in Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore and bringing them into the organization, said Steve Venghaus, Stevens Air chairman.
''We are very strong in New York and Newark,'' he said, adding that Stevens needs to establish beachheads in other major markets.
Rather than hiring a local air freight executive who knows the East Coast, Mr. Venghaus gave the assignment to Mr. Chambers chiefly because he earned it. ''We wanted someone who knew the Stevens system and culture and Karl grew up with this company,'' Mr. Venghaus said.
Cherry Hill was chosen because it is convenient to both Philadelphia and Newark.
