EXXON TANKER FEUD
GOES TO FEDERAL COURTA federal judge said he was inclined to rule unconstitutional any Santa Barbara County regulation aimed at halting crude oil tanker shipments along the California coast.
Exxon Corp. asked U.S. District Judge J. Spencer Letts for a court order to stop Santa Barbara County meddling in San Francisco-to-Los Angeles crude oil shipments 50 miles offshore.
The Houston-based oil giant wants the judge to intervene before county officials tighten requirements on Exxon, forcing it to use pipelines for oil that passes through its treatment facility north of Goleta.
Judge Letts said he wouldn't issue a restraining order until Santa Barbara County made a final decision on the regulation.
