Iran has paid back foreign loans that became due in the past Iranian year, ended on March 20, and plans to pay back what falls due in the current year, central bank governor Mohsen Nourbakhsh said Sunday.
The official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Mr. Nourbakhsh as saying in an interview that Iran "paid all its loans that were due for payment during the past calendar year.""He said Iran rescheduled its foreign loans and will pay them this year . . . as per the timetable agreed upon with foreign trade partners," IRNA said.
IRNA did not say how much Iran paid off of its debt in the past year or how much it would pay this year.
Iranian officials put the country's foreign debt at about $20 billion. Foreign bankers say it is closer to $30 billion.
