NEW YORK - The number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the United States rose 27 to 830 last week, above the year-earlier total of 801, Baker Hughes Inc. said.
For the week ended Oct. 23, rigs drilling on land rose 18 to 763. The number in inland waters rose 10 to 17, while the number offshore fell one to 50.
The biggest changes among individual states occurred in Louisiana and Wyoming, where the number of active rigs drilling rose 10 and seven, respectively, according to Baker Hughes, a Houston-based oil field services company.

INKS DEAL WITH ITALY
NEW YORK - The Algerian national oil company, Sonatrach, signed an $8 billion contract to supply Italy with an additional four billion cubic meters of natural gas annually through its trans-Mediterranean pipeline, according to Opecna, the OPEC news agency.
