TO USE CANADIAN GASCanadian natural gas producers in Alberta approved contracts to sell gas to a 240-megawatt cogeneration plant to be built in Springfield, Mass.
The $170 million MassPower project will be located at the Monsanto Chemical Co.'s Springfield works, which will buy the steam.
The plant is being built by J. Makowski Co., Boston, Bechtel Development Co., General Electric Co., Tenneco Gas and Granite State Gas Transmission.
The plant will use 50 million cubic feet a day, half from the Alberta gas contract and the rest from Distrigas of Massachusetts Corp., a unit of Cabot Corp. The gas will be transported on the proposed Iroquois Gas Transmission System. J. Makowski is also a partner in that project.
The plant is expected to open in 1992.
