FOR UNEMPLOYMENT UPNew applications for unemployment benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 334,000 in the week ended May 27 from 303,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The number of people actually receiving benefits under regular state programs was 2.118 million in the week ended May 20, the latest period for which that figure was available.
That was an increase from 2.034 million in the previous week.
PRODUCER PRICE RISE
WASHINGTON - Increases in gasoline and food prices helped push up the U.S. producer price index 0.5 percent in May following a 0.4 percent advance in April, according to an average of analysts' estimates.
Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the analysts called for a modest 0.3 percent gain in May prices.
