U.S. District Court Judge Harold H. Greene has before him a petition to extend a temporary restraining order to bar the engagement of shipping services to Iceland by the Navy's Military Sealift Command for another 10 days.
The original 10-day order, barring the MSC from accepting any rates bid to
haul defense shipments to Iceland, runs out Friday. The responses and the process of obtaining information have not been completed.
Rainbow Navigation Co., Red Bank, N.J., sought to block MSC's procurement on grounds that it wasn't in line with the 1986 treaty between the United States and Iceland to share carriage of the defense shipments moving rather than putting them all on the U.S.-flag ships, meaning Rainbow's.
Judge Greene indicated earlier during oral arguments on the petition for the temporary restraining order that he was likely to consider extending the prohibition.
The bids for the coming year were due Monday, and have been put off indefinitely.
