Miwon and Synthetech
Set Aspartame VentureBOULDER, Colo. - Synthetech Inc. and Miwon Co. of Seoul, South Korea, have formed a joint venture to manufacture and sell aspartame, an artificial sweetener, with production scheduled for 1989.
Miwon, a diversified food products and manufacturing company with global sales of $1 billion, has developed a proprietary low-cost method to produce L- phenylalanine, the key raw material for aspartame. Synthetech, a manufacturer of fine chemicals, has developed a proprietary low-cost enzymatic process to produce aspartame.
Sales of aspartame, a low-calorie sweetener, reached $800 million in 1987. Aspartame use patents, held by the NutraSweet Co., have recently expired in most significant world markets except the United States. U.S. patents will expire in 1992.
Epitope Wins Contract
For AIDS Testing
BEAVERTON, Ore. - Epitope Inc. announced that it has been selected as an acquired immune deficiency syndrome diagnostic supplier for a three-year National Centers for Disease Control study to determine the presence of HIV antibodies in newborn infants and women of childbearing age.
Under terms of the $1.5 million agreement, Epitope will provide Atlanta- based CDC with Western Blot confirmatory supplies to train the staff in the use of Western Blot technology at some 30 laboratories throughout the United States.
The Western Blot test is the standard confirmatory test to determine the presence of HIV antibodies.
Epitope Inc. is involved in biotechnology product development from diagnostic and therapeutic research addressing diseases of worldwide concern.
Fluor Unit Is Awarded
Paper Mill Contract
IRVINE, Calif. - A unit of Fluor Corp. was awarded a $170 million contract by Fort Howard Corp., based in Green Bay, Wis., for upgrading the company's Rincon, Ga., paper mill.
The Industrial Sector of Fluor Daniel will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a new paper machine plus additional power generating and converting facilities at the mill.
