CSAV said Monday it placed a firm order for two 8,000 container ships with capacities of 8,000 20-foot-equivalent container units.
CSAV has been adding new destinations, including connections to Asia, over the past year. They added Asia-South Africa service over the summer.
The Chilean carrier, which Alphaliner ranks as the world's seventh-largest carrier by capacity, contracted with Samsung Heavy Industries for the vessels, which are scheduled for delivery in June and July 2012.
The contract agreement includes an option for four more similar vessels.
CSAV also has orders with Samsung for five 8,000 TEU vessels that are scheduled for delivery in 2011 and 2012.
