Supply chain education lost one of its giants and the world lost a good man with the death last week of Dr. John T. Mentzer at age 58.
Tom Mentzer was a longtime University of Tennessee professor of marketing and logistics who combined academic scholarship with practical knowledge gained from working with numerous companies. He received several top industry awards and other recognition for his work, and was a prolific author of books and articles on supply chain management.
One of the last things he wrote was not a supply chain article but was "Learning to Celebrate Life," a 53-page reflection on his life, his ordeal with melanoma cancer, and his beliefs. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals fulfilled his wish to make it widely available by posting it online. It's worth reading.
