The December ISM manufacturing inventory index slowed 4.9 points sequentially to 51.8 percent. In contrast, the December ISM new manufacturing orders index accelerated 4.3 points from November to 60.9 percent.
ISM notes the new orders index above 50.2 percent, over time, is generally consistent with an increase in the Census Bureau's series on manufacturing orders (in constant 2000 dollars). ISM also notes a reading beyond 42.6 percent over time in the manufacturing inventory index generally indicates expansion in the Bureau of Economic Analysis' figures on overall manufacturing inventories.
