Port of LA Exports Rise 28.1 Percent to Record High

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
Imports rose 5.5 percent year-over-year, fell from September, August

The Port of Los Angeles in October saw imports rise 5.5 percent from the same period a year ago and exports jump 28.1 year-over-year, an all-time monthly high.

Loaded export containers totaled 193,547 20-foot equivalent units, putting the port on track for another record year in containerized exports. Imports rose to 368,843 TEUs, but were down from August and September. August is shaping up to be the busiest month of the year for containerized imports in Los Angeles.

The volume of empty containers returning to Asia dropped 17.4 percent in October, an indication that more containers were leaving the port loaded with export cargo.

Los Angeles’ year-to-date numbers through October are basically flat. Total loaded and empty containers were up 0.68 percent compared to the first 10 months of 2010.
