West Coast Container Exports Rise 4 Percent

Total cargo throughput at West Coast ports in November rose 1 percent year-over-year, largely thanks to a 4 percent jump in containerized exports.

Continuing a trend that existed for much of the year, containerized imports declined 1 percent from the previous November, according to compiled statistics from the Pacific Maritime Association’s Web site.

In the first 11 months of 2011, West Coast ports registered a gain of 2 percent in total container volume compared to the same time period in 2010. In each month, exports in 2011 exceeded the exports recorded in the same month of 2010.

Imports, however, lagged most of the year, and in the January-November period, imports were down 2 percent compared to the first 11 months of 2010.
