With the North American Emission Control Area regulations set to take effect on Aug. 1, shipping groups in the U.S. and Canada will hold a workshop in Tacoma on June 28 to discuss measures available to reduce vessel emissions.
The North American ECA, which was adopted by the International Maritime Organization, will mandate that vessel operators reduce emissions within 200 miles of all coasts in the U.S. and Canada.
“The purpose of this conference is to share all available information on what is required and the variety of strategies for reducing emissions, from using different fuel blends to installing emission-control devices,” said T.L. Garrett, vice president of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association.
The PMSA, the Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia and Sustainable Shipping are sponsoring the one-day meeting.
Additional topics to be discussed are the technologies available in this area and the availability of fuel that will meet the requirements in the ECA, said Stephen Brown, president of the British Columbia shipping group.
