The Virginia Port Authority has continued to reduce the amount of air pollution from its Hampton Roads Harbor terminals by modernizing equipment, using low-emissions diesel fuel and incentivizing the use of clean diesel and fuel-saving technology, according to an air emissions inventory of operations at the VPA’s marine terminals in 2011.
The study was commissioned by the VPA as part of its ongoing environmental policy.
The VPA began modeling emissions from marine terminal operations in 2004 and updated the emissions inventory in 2005, 2008 and 2011.
Emissions from the authority’s cargo handling equipment have “declined dramatically,” while total cargo volume increase 28 percent from 2004 to 2011, said Rodney W. Oliver, the VPA’s interim executive director, in a written statement.
