The Port of Virginia handled 175,330 20-foot-equivalent units in October, an increase of 1.5 percent from the 182,318 TEUs handled in September, and also up 1.5 percent year-over-year, the Virginia Port Authority announced today.
October was the ninth consecutive month of growth, said Rodney W. Oliver, VPA’s interim executive director. Volume would have been higher, but some cargo was diverted to the West Coast as a result of the threat of a strike by the International Longshoremen's Association, and some vessel calls were pushed to November because of Hurricane Sandy, he said.
In the first 10 months of 2012, the port handled 1,721,417 TEUs, an increase of 7.6 percent from the 1,599,784 TEUs handled in the same period last year.
Rail containers in October totaled 33,031, increasing 8.2 percent year-over-year. For the first 10 months of the year, rail containers totaled 314,050, up 14.3 percent from 2011.
