Port of Virginia Posts Jump in November TEU Volume

The Port of Virginia handled 198,720 20-foot-equivalent units in November, a 21.2 percent increase from November 2011, the Virginia Port Authority reported.

Year-to-date, the port has handled 1.92 million TEUs, up 8.9 percent from 1.76 million TEUs during the same period last year.

The month’s container total was 113,288 units, and the general cargo tonnage was a record 1.67 million tons.

Total rail containers handled in November were 37,478, jumping 40.3 percent year-over-year and setting the record for the most monthly rail containers in the port’s history. Rail containers handled year-to-date were 351,528, an increase of 16.6 percent compared with the same period last year.
