The International Longshore and Warehouse Union will take to a federal appellate court its jurisdictional battle over the handling of refrigerated containers at the Port of Portland, the ILWU stated in a press release.

West Coast container ports experienced a decline in year-over-year traffic in the second quarter of 2013. Overall throughput to major West Coast ports in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada fell 2.3 percent from 6,114,834 20-foot-equivalent containers in second quarter 2012 to 5,975,881 TEUs in second quarter 2013. Market shares of major Pacific Northwest and Mexican ports were down on the North American West Coast this quarter compared to the year prior. However, ports in Canada and California saw their shares climb in this market.

Oregon’s Port of Portland reported total container traffic totaled 13,934 20-foot-equivalent units in June, rising 21.5 percent year-over-year from 11,473 TEUs and 7.1 percent month-over-month from 13,014 TEUs.
