The Port of Oakland confirmed Friday that cargo handling will resume on the evening shift after the port was closed for the day shift for a rescheduled labor meeting. Normal operations along the vessels, in the yards and at the gates are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Pacific time.

East Coast containerized imports in February almost reached parity with West Coast imports, demonstrating the profound shift in trade that has resulted from port congestion and work slowdowns by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union at West Coast ports. The Port of Oakland said Thursday the vessel backlog that contributed to congestion is over, although vessels may occasionally bunch up at the Northern California port as Los Angeles-Long Beach works to relieve the vessel backlog that is expected to remain in Southern California for at least the coming month.
