Container Volume Drops at Port of Oakland

Laden container volume at the Port of Oakland fell 4.6 percent in November year-over-year and 8.2 percent from October, to 190,556 20-foot-equivalent units.

Import volume of 63,914 TEUs declined 7 percent from November 2011 and 5.8 percent from the month before. Exports slumped 8.5 percent from a year earlier and 9.6 percent from October, to 80,771 TEUs.

The port handled 23,848 TEUs in empty import containers, up 2 percent year-over-year but down 12.9 percent from October. Export empties jumped 13.6 percent from a year earlier, but dropped 4.7 percent from October, to 22,023 TEUs.

Year-to-date, the port handled 2.1 million containers, sliding 0.2 percent compared to the first 11 months of 2011.
