Container Volume Climbs at Port of Oakland

Laden container volume at the Port of Oakland increased 5.3 percent in October year-over-year and 8.4 percent from September, to 207,627 20-foot-equivalent units.

Import volume of 67,815 TEUs was up 3.6 percent from October 2011 and 3.7 percent from the month before. Exports increased 4.1 percent from a year earlier and 18.0 percent from September, to 89,312 TEUs. 

The port handled 27,394 TEUs in empty import containers, up 36.2 percent from October 2011 and 35.1 percent from the previous month. Export empties, however, declined 10.8 percent from a year earlier and 23.2 percent from September, to 23,106 TEUs.

Year-to-date, the port has handled 2.0 million containers, up 0.2 percent compared with the first 10 months of 2011.
