The Port of New Orleans set records for container traffic in 2012 and completed more than $100 million in new infrastructure projects, said Gary LaGrange, the port’s president and CEO, at the recent 26th Annual State of the Port Address.
In the first six months of 2012, the port handled 241,707 20-foot-equivalent units, exceeding the count for the same period last year. For the full year 2011, the port handled a record 476,413 TEUs.
Year-to-date, general cargo was up 8.5 percent, buoyed by a 23-percent increase in breakbulk cargo, and ship calls climbed more than 3 percent, LaGrange said.
