ILWU is slowly but surely taking work away from itself and with their cost structure, lack of productivity it will keep going as their customers find alternatives.
Volume also down because more companies are moving production to Mexico because of the increase labor costs in China and the increases in transportation and the uncertainty of getting cargo on time with capacity issues and slow steaming
I just came back from visiting our San Diego Distribution Centers and then meetings in Tijuana. Manufacturing is really starting to crank up and we are seeing high demand for our San Diego locations. Shorter supply chain, avoidance of all the union drama at the ports, and the higher costs from the steamship lines have all led to customers making the decision to manufacture more in Mexico, ultimately taking a bite out of port volume.
Bill, I would like to see more stats on your assumption that West coast ports are losing market share to EC ports. Nothing in your article speaks to this directly with any evidence!?! is there any? Please share. Over the last 2 years, including this last Q of 2012, I would think the numbers show no change in "market share". Please enlighten me!
