Rendering of replacement for Gerald Desmond Bridge. Courtesy of the Port of Long Beach.Federal, state and local officials recently celebrated the start of construction on a $1 billion, four-year project to replace the Gerald Desmond Bridge at the Port of Long Beach in California.
The new cable-stayed bridge will raise the clearance over the channel from 155 feet to 200 feet, allowing the world’s biggest cargo ships to enter the port’s inner harbor.
A joint venture team headed by Shimmick Construction, FCC Construction and Impregilo is the primary contractor for the design and construction of the replacement bridge.
The bridge is among $4.5 billion in current and planned improvements to further modernize the Port of Long Beach.
