Chairwoman Janeice Longoria during her introduction at the Port of Houston Authority's monthly meeting. The Port of Houston Authority's container volume in 2012 was 18.5 million tons, Len Waterworth, the port authority’s executive director, reported at the port commission's regular monthly meeting.
The port also handled 1.2 million container units and 1.9 million 20-foot-equivalent units in 2012, and was visited by a record 8,395 vessels.
Total tonnage in 2012 was 29 million tons, increasing 1.8 million tons or 7 percent compared with 2011. The growth was primarily driven by steel, which increased by 1.1 million tons or 26 percent year-over-year.
Revenue in 2012 was $223 million, rising 9 percent from 2011 and reflecting increases in container revenues, steel tonnage and dredge disposal fees. Net operating income of $22 million in 2012 is $11 million or 112 percent above the previous year’s performance.
Total tonnage in December 2012 was flat year-over-year at 2.2 million tons.
Janeice Longoria was also introduced at the meeting as the new port commission chairwoman.
