Transportation infrastructure ground to a halt and at least one person was killed as Typhoon Saola made landfall in eastern Taiwan on Thursday.
Numerous domestic and international flights were canceled, and roads and railways were closed due to gale force winds and heavy rains.
Inchcape Shipping Services reported all ports were closed early Thursday, with the exception of Kaohsiung on the protected west coast. A number of high-tech exporters also reported production suspensions.
The grade two typhoon was expected to weaken before hitting Fujian and Zheijiang provinces in southeast China later Thursday or early Friday.
China also has issued storm warnings ahead of Typhoon Damrey, which should make landfall on Friday.
Government officials warn the two storms could cause flooding and transportation delays across 10 provinces in the days ahead.
