The number of foreign trade containers moving through the Port of Tokyo rose 9.7 percent in the first half of 2011 from the same period last year to 1.98 million TEUs.
According to a preliminary report released by the Tokyo metropolitan government, about 913,000 TEUs were exported between January and June, up 11.4 percent from a year earlier, and about 1.07 million TEUs were imported, up 8.4 percent from a year earlier.
Tokyo is Japan’s largest container port followed by Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka.
The Tokyo Metropolitan government’s preliminary report also shows container exports to the U.S. edged up 1.5 percent in the first half of this year from a year earlier by tonnage to about 1.15 million tons while container imports from the U.S. increased 4.8 percent to about 1.97 million tons.
The U.S. is now Japan’s second-largest trading partner after China.
