Market intelligence provider Industrial Info Resources is currently tracking 13 active coal export terminal projects in Queensland, Australia, worth more than $33.1 million, and has reported that if all of these projects are approved and built over the next decade, an excess of 500 million metric tons would be added annually to the state’s existing 250 million metric ton coal export capacity.
The projects include those at Wiggins Island, Balaclava Island, Abbot Point and Gladstone, as well as large expansions of the existing terminals at Hay Point and Abbot Point.
The terminals would ensure sufficient capacity for more than 50 new coal mines currently under development in Australia. However, a report by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning indicated that many of them might not be necessary, IIR said.
