A study by a Rhode Island legislative commission said development of auto import-export cargo, offshore wind farms, container feeder services and breakbulk shipments could increase jobs, income and state and local tax revenue.
Development of port infrastructure and expansion of maritime industries could generate 1,000 jobs, $70 million in annual personal income, $127 million in business revenue and $8.1 million in state and local taxes, according to the Special legislative Commission to Study Potential Economic Opportunities in the Development of Port Facilities in Rhode Island.
The state general assembly authorized the commission’s study in 2009.
Among other things, the commission recommended improved coordination, participation in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s marine highway program, exploration of public-private partnerships for infrastructure and business development at the Port of Davisville, which now handles auto shipments.
