The Shanghai International Shipping Institute has ranked the top 100 container terminals with the greatest potential for development in 2012, based on three indicators: the growth rate of container throughput, GDP growth of local economy and investment attracted by ports.
The top four ports were all in China: Dalian, Yingkou, Qingdao and Tianjin. The report said that Chinese container terminals have a “bright future.”
However, African and Latin American ports showed significant potential too. The Port of Durban in South Africa was the fifth highest port ranked, but the ports of Santos and CoonawayCandie in Brazil; the Lirquen port in Chile and the Balboa port in Panama also showed up in the top 20 spots, as well as Port Said in Egypt.
Ports in Eastern Europe, specifically the Baltic coastal ports, also ranked well, driven by large-scale investment and development, the study found.
