The Port of Philadelphia in 2011 saw container traffic rise 6.7 percent year-over-year and auto shipments skyrocket 85 percent in the same period.
Container throughput last year at the port’s two container terminals rose to 291,091 20-foot equivalent units, and container tonnage expanded 9 percent to 2 million metric tons, the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority said Wednesday.
Total cargo throughput rose 10 percent year-over-year to 3.9 million tons, thanks to a surge in Hyundai and Kia auto shipments. The port last year handled 127,347 auto units, equaling about 174,978 tons, a 126 percent year-over-year gain.
