Panama Canal Authority OKs Start of Atlantic-Side Bridge Construction

The Panama Canal Authority has issued a notice to Vinci Construction Grands Projets to start building a bridge on the Atlantic side of the canal.

The French building company, which was awarded the contract in October 2012, has 1,274 construction days to complete the bridge.

The double-plane, twin pylon, cable-stayed bridge, to be built with reinforced concrete, will feature two lanes of traffic in each direction. It will be 4.6 kilometers (about 0.6 miles) in length and will stand 75 meters (about 246 feet) above sea level.
