A longshore worker at the Norfolk, Va., port died Tuesday when a mobile container carrier knocked into a light pole, sending it crashing onto the man’s vehicle.
Officials say the accident happened Tuesday afternoon at the Norfolk International Terminals when a straddle carrier hauling a container struck a large light pole.
Local television news footage of the scene showed the accident happened within 50 years of the terminal’s North Berth, where the tall light pole crushed the worker’s vehicle.
Port officials said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to local reports, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
