Unionized dockworkers called off a threatened strike at the APM Terminals facility in India’s Port of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru).
“The proposed indefinite protest from Monday has been called off. There is no disruption in the port,” a shipping line agent at Nhava Sheva said.
Sources said the threatened action was averted following talks between local trade union-political leaders and port-terminal officials.
Labor federations issued the strike notice to exert pressure on terminal management to settle the dockers’ various demands, including the reinstatement of workers suspended for disciplinary reasons.
APMT Mumbai is Nehru’s largest container facility with an estimated annual capacity of 2.25 million 20-foot equivalent units.
Nehru handles about 60 percent of India’s total containerized export and import cargo movements. The port's container throughput for fiscal 2011-12, which ended March 31, totaled a record 4.32 million TEUs.
