A pier superintendent at Maher Terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey was arrested on a federal complaint accusing him of running an illegal bookmaking business.
Joseph Joel DiCosta was accused of managing an illegal gambling business, using Internet sites and 1-800 telephone numbers. The criminal case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
The Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor suspended DiCosta's license as a pier superintendent pending an administrative hearing on the charges.
