Maritime Labour Convention Set to Enter Into Force

The International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, has cleared its last hurdle and will go into effect in a year’s time.

Ratification by Russia and the Philippines fulfills a requirement that at least 30 ILO member countries ratify the convention, which establishes minimum requirements for almost all aspects of working conditions for seafarers. A second requirement — that ratifying countries represent 33 percent of the world’s gross shipping tonnage — was met in 2009, the ILO said.
