The port of Liverpool will start construction early next year on a $480 million, deep water container terminal with an initial 500,000 20-foot equivalent units-a-year capacity.
Peel Ports, owner of the U.K. west coast port, has invited bids from European construction companies for the Liverpool 2 terminal, due to open in 2015.
The terminal, able to simultaneously handle two container ships of up to 13,500 TEUs each, will double the port’s annual capacity to 1.5 million TEUs. Liverpool handled about 700,000 TEUs in 2011.
The project is dependent on a $56 million U.K. government grant to dredge the river Mersey.
