Containerized imports at the Port of Los Angeles increased 6 percent in June compared to June 2011, while exports were up 6.9 percent. Total loaded and empty containers moving through the nation’s largest port were up 8.75 percent compared to the same month last year.
Overall container volume at the port, including empties, was up 6.45 percent in the first six months of 2012.
Although imports were higher than in June 2011, imports last month were lower than in April and in May this year. The deceleration of imports could bode ill for the peak shipping season in the trans-Pacific, which normally runs from August through October.
