Construction has begun on a project to boost capacity at Australia’s Port of Melbourne.
The A$1.6 billion (approximately US$1.7 billion) project includes additional shipping berths and on-dock inspection facilities to support the port’s growing vehicle trade and other improvements.
Victorian Minister for Ports David Hodgett said the competitive bidding by private parties for the right to operate the facilities is progressing well. The container terminal — Melbourne’s third — and automotive facilities are expected to be operational in late 2016.
