Yisrael Katz, Israel’s transportation minister, has announced that tenders for the construction and operation of two new ports will be issued by July 1, Haaretz reports.

The Israeli government is planning to issue a tender to build a privately run seaport in the coming months, pledging to end the monopolies of the two main ports of Ashdod and Haifa, Haaretz reports.

Israel’s Haifa Port reported its container traffic in 2012 was 1.38 million 20-foot-equivalent units, an 11.5 percent increase compared with 2011 and a record high for the port.
