The Port of Galveston named Capt. Michael J Mierzwa as its new port director, effective Feb. 16.
Mierzwa, who has been deputy port director of the Port of Galveston for the last six years, succeeds Steve Cernak, who left the port to head the Port Everglades in Florida. As deputy director of Port Galveston since 2005, Mierzwa managed port operations and facilities. For the five years before that he was the manager of the Texas Cruise Ship Terminal on Galveston Island.
He has over 30 years executive-level marine transportation management, operations and logistics experience in both the public and private sectors.
Mierzwa is a 29-year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring with the rank of captain in 1998. His last assignment in the Coast Guard was as the chief of Staff for the 14th Coast Guard District in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was also the chief of operations for the Coast Guard in Alaska and commanding officer of two Coast Guard cutters.
