Deep-Sea TEU Volume Pushes Marseilles to Record Year

The Port of Marseilles Fos Authority in France reported container throughput rose 13 percent in 2012 to a record 1.1 million 20-foot-equivalent units, driven primarily by a 16 percent surge in deep-sea volume.

General cargo was up 11 percent to 17.2 million metric tons, which included a 12 percent rise in container tonnage to 10.5 million metric tons. However, total cargo slipped 3 percent to 85.8 million metric tons in 2012.

A port strategy plan will be drawn up this year for the period of 2014 to 2018.
