DP World Orders 69 Cranes for Jebel Ali Port

DP World has ordered 69 cranes for a new 4 million 20-foot-equivalent unit capacity terminal at its flagship Jebel Ali container port in the United Arab Emirates.

The Dubai-based port operator is buying 19 ship-to-shore quay cranes and 50 rail-mounted gantry cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries and Abu Dhabi’s Trans Gulf Port Cranes.

The new container terminal, which will be 1,860 meters ( 6,102 feet) long,with a depth of 17 meters [56 feet], will boost annual capacity at Jebel Ali to 19 million TEUs when it opens in 2014.

In the first six months of 2012, DP World’s UAE region, of which Jebel Ali is the biggest terminal, handled 6.6 million TEUs, an increase of 7.3 percent year-over-year.
