An intermodal transfer facility that will serve an expanded Global Terminal at Bayonne, N.J., will receive an $11.4 million federal construction grant under the TIGER program.
The grant for the South Hudson Intermodal Facility was among $500 million in TIGER grants announced by the Transportation Department. About $100 million of the grants were for port and freight rail projects.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was scheduled to be in Bayonne on Friday to formally announce the grant, which will supplement more than $100 million in funding by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The intermodal yard will be north of Global Terminal, which is being expanded onto an adjacent site that will have remote-controlled rail-mounted gantry cranes and scanner-equipped truck gates.
The intermodal yard is designed to handle up to 250,000 container lifts a year.
